Brandon's Western Motors Job

Brandon at his workplace

Working in Western Motors

Brandon loves transport – he knows the train and bus timetables from Dundalk to anywhere in Ireland inside out.

His Employment Facilitator, Eimear, secured a work experience placement in Clarke Station in Dundalk for him which he absolutely loved and during which he showed how capable he is. Although there was no work available in the Railway Station, Brandon was keen to get part-time employment anywhere in the transport industry.

His next work experience placement was valeting cars with Western Motors. He did such a fantastic job that when his work experience finished he was offered paid work and now valets all of Western Motors cars on Monday afternoons. He loves going to work, and especially working amongst the cars in the showroom.

My son and daughter have availed of the services offered by WALK PEER Programme. While initially we were not too hopeful that the programme would be of any great advantage we changed our opinion very quickly and realised that WALK PEER was different – in a very positive way – from agencies which had endeavoured to assist our children previously. What we saw was real commitment – unlike many of the lukewarm efforts we had come across through the years. A trial of work experience resulted in our son being offered a part-time job, which is something we would not have realistically envisaged for him just a year ago. These few hours a week mean so much to him – not in terms of income but the acknowledgment that he is able to do work that is of value to his employer, which he, the employer considers worth paying for. He is respected by his employer and those he works with. This is a big boost for Brandon’s self-confidence, and for us as his parents. While we are aware of the time limitations the Programme has been allocated, we fully hope that an extension will be granted as the usefulness of the Project to people can change their whole meaning of life.
