Patrick joined WALK PEER, in Louth, in May 2013 as a senior student in school. Patrick had no previous experience of employment and was not clear on what having a job would mean for him. He initially struggled with confidence and low motivation however after spending some time exploring options and developing his work readiness skills with his Employment Facilitator, Andrea, Patrick set a Personal Progression Plan (PPP) goal of working in a hotel environment.
Andrea secured a work experience placement in February 2014 with the Westcourt Hotel in Drogheda so Patrick could test out this employment path. Initially this work experience was for a four week period on Saturdays so that Patrick could learn the tasks involved in setting up for a function. He performed extremely well in this placement and the General Manager became a natural support for him.
Patrick himself really enjoyed the work and wanted to further his chances of employment in the sector. After discussion with Andrea both Patrick and the hotel felt it would be of benefit if he continued his work experience so that he could learn different tasks with a view to building up to serving customers. Patrick then had the opportunity to serve at a function (his school graduation dinner!).
Patrick performed so well that he is now a paid employee working the busy Saturday afternoon shift in the Westcourt restaurant and is an integral member of the team there.
