I UNDERSTAND“My name is Sam and I am a student at RLT (Real Life Training) in WALK. I work in Costa Coffee, Drimnagh and El Gringo in Stephens Green Shopping Centre. Since I began work in Costa coffee in Drimnagh 2 years ago, it has been one of my biggest goals to become a barista. Watching the baristas make coffees of all sorts for the customers inspired me to want to do the same thing. At the moment I clear away plates and cups from tables and make sure the area is clean and tidy for the next customer coming in. I load the plates into the dishwasher, sweep the floor and wipe the tables. When in El Gringo, I do a similar job clearing the tables and making sure the area is neat and tidy.
Recently, I completed a barista training course. Since I completed my training, I now actually make coffee for customers in Insomnia in Stephens Green Shopping Centre for one hour, while at work in El Gringo. This is a huge achievement for me and I am really enjoying it. A big challenge for me was to learn to use the coffee machines. You have to be able to remember how all the different bits work, while the customer is waiting for their coffee. My barista training and practice has really helped me with this and I am feeling confident now while using the machine.
Another big achievement for me is celebrating my 2 year anniversary of working at Costa. I am planning on celebrating with my colleagues who I have a really good relationship with. The next step for me is to maybe complete the next stage in barista training and do a latte art workshop. Hopefully I will be able to start making more coffees soon and keep building up my barista skills”.
