The Walk for Walk group annually organise the most amazing trek on the first weekend of July. People meet at Walkinstown and are transported to the foothill of Djouce Mountain where a most fabulous trek takes place. The event is not organised by WALK but by a group of local community supporters. We are so grateful for the time, energy and effort that they put in to making this event so successful. It has helped WALK enormously in building community ties and link. The annual mountain challenge walk has been hailed as a favourite event on many our of community supporters calendar. Friendships have formed over the years and people have enjoyed training before doing the walk. The Walk for Walk group has had a deep impact in building and embedding community ties and community spirit. This lies right at the centre of what WALK aims to achieve.
In 2020 the walk could not go ahead. However, the organisers are not ones to sit on their laurels and so they threw the gauntlet down and challenged people to a 60 minute walking challenge. The group set up an idonate page so that people participating can raise funds for WALK's community project fund. This fund supports community projects and events that are inclusive and benefit the people WALK support as well as the community. The funding also helps the people WALK supports to achieve their goals through access to training, education and recreational opportunities.
The 2020 walk saw people take in their local neighbourhoods in guided history tours, 10km trails around Bohernabreena, trips to the top of the Keadeen in West Wicklow, different parkland areas around Dublin 12 and Dublin 16, Dargle River right through to the People's Park in Dun Laoighre and a jaunt around Bray. People said they had a great time, so did their furry friends and only one shoe didn't make it home.
