David's Story

Personal Reflection on My Employer – WALK

I began my journey with WALK in 2019, after spending time in various other disability services. It was a close friend who encouraged me to consider WALK, insisting they were different – and he was absolutely right.

In previous services where I had worked, the focus often rested on limitations – on what the person being supported couldn’t do or shouldn’t do. But at WALK, the perspective is refreshingly different. The emphasis is on possibility, potential, and what each person can do. This simple yet powerful shift in mindset is what first drew me in and continues to inspire me every day.

WALK's commitment to an inclusive society, equal opportunities, and empowering people with disabilities are values that deeply resonate with me. One of the things that struck me early on was the organisation’s genuine focus on equality for all, a strong belief in positive risk-taking, and an unwavering belief in the people we support. This isn’t just talk – it’s embedded in everyday practice.

Since joining WALK, I have not only supported others to grow, but I’ve grown tremendously in my own professional practice. I’ve learned to see possibility where others might see limits, and to support individuals in achieving goals that are meaningful to them.

While there have been challenges along the way, I have always felt supported. I’ve also had the privilege of working alongside fantastic, passionate teams who are committed to making a real difference.

Looking back, I’m grateful for the path that led me here. WALK has not only shaped my career but also enriched my outlook on inclusion, dignity, and human potential.
